Firefighters Protest Lack of Contract

City firefighters rallied at City Hall on Tuesday to protest stalled contract negotiations.

Firefighters, without a contract since July 1996, want a 5% pay raise over a three-year period.

“The big stumbling block has been that the city’s last, best and final offer reflected no increase in wages for a 27-month period,” said Richard Chavez, president of Anaheim Firefighters’ Assn.

More than 50 firefighters marched from the city’s downtown ice rink to City Hall and asked the City Council to reconsider its contract offer.

The 204-member association also wants the pay for entry-level firefighters to be raised to the county median, which is about $3,030 a month, Chavez said. Entry-level firefighters in Anaheim are now paid $2,569 a month. In addition, firefighters are seeking the same retirement plan that police officers and public safety administrators receive, Chavez said.

City officials declined comment on details of the proposed contract except to say negotiations will continue.
