Pastor Trying to Block Casa Romantica Restaurant
- Share via
A local pastor is attempting to garner support behind efforts to preserve the historic Casa Romantica, despite the city’s plans to convert the 70-year-old Spanish-style mansion into a restaurant.
The Rev. Gary Erb of St. Clement’s By-The-Sea Episcopal Church, homeowners associations and the city’s visitor’s center are forming a committee to seek alternative uses for the home, built by San Clemente’s founder, Ole Hanson.
A meeting is scheduled at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, 202 Avenida Aragon. Erb said he believes the site would be ruined if it were developed into a restaurant.
City planners have been working with Carlsbad-based Grand Pacific Resorts on a plan that includes a Mexican restaurant and possibly a cultural center and art exhibit for the site. The Redevelopment Agency bought the home in 1988 for $2.5 million and is hoping to recoup those costs.
