Science Project Team Advances in Contest
A teacher and four students from Hewes Middle School have been selected as one of the winning teams in the Toshiba/National Science Teachers Assn. ExploraVision Awards program, one of the nation’s largest student science competitions.
The project of science teacher Christine Karlberg Cantrell and students Emily Feher, Robin Holland, Sabrina Hay and Rachel McIntyre was chosen from nearly 5,000 entries.
The annual competition asks students to project what a form of technology might be able to do in 20 years.
Their project, “Microchip Miracle,” envisions a microchip that would be implanted in an area of nerve damage in a paralyzed patient, sending appropriate electrical impulses to the brain.
Each team member received a $100 savings bond. The team was given $500 to produce a video of the project, which will be reviewed by a panel of judges in the next phase of competition. Twelve teams will be selected as finalists in Washington in June.
