Activists to Rally Over Wetlands Plans

Share

Environmentalists will rally in the Los Cerritos wetlands Saturday in support of their crusade to have the land restored to a salt marsh instead of built into a shopping center.

“They want to develop it,” said Seal Beach resident Tim Anderson, who will lead the protest in his boat. “What we would like to see is some restoration instead of just another housing development.”

Environmental groups including the Sierra Club and Audubon Society were spurred into action last October after learning of plans for a retail center on the site, a marshy 300-acre swath of undeveloped land along the San Gabriel River on the Orange-Los Angeles county line.

Right now, the property is dotted with oil rigs.

Mountain bikers and boaters will meet at noon Saturday on the beach at Appian Way and Bayshore Avenue in Long Beach. They hope to call attention to the beauty of the land.

Another meeting on the Los Cerritos wetlands is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Naples Elementary School auditorium, 5537 The Toledo on Naples Island.
