Manella Nominated for Federal Bench
President Clinton nominated U.S. Atty. Nora Manella on Tuesday for a seat on the federal District Court bench in Los Angeles.
Manella, who must be confirmed by the Senate, served as an assistant U.S. attorney in Los Angeles for eight years before becoming U.S. attorney here. Sen. Dianne Feinstein recommended Manella, 46, for the judgeship.
Clinton named Manella to her current position in 1994.
During her tenure as U.S. attorney, Manella has supervised successful prosecutions of former Arizona Gov. Fife Symington, a Republican; former Rep. Walter R. Tucker III (D-Compton); former Compton City Councilwoman Patricia Moore, a Democrat; and Rep. Jay C. Kim (R-Diamond Bar).
Her office also garnered the first federal civil rights conviction of an Immigration and Naturalization Service agent for beating an illegal immigrant.
A Los Angeles native, Manella is a graduate of Wellesley College and USC Law School.
