Gender should not be a shield from tough scrutiny in the governor’s race. I can see no reason--except gender--why every paper in the state has failed to make to obvious comparison between Michael Huffington, the wealthy, carpetbagger empty-suit congressman who spent inherited money running for statewide office, and Rep. Jane Harman (D-Torrance).

Harman lived in Washington for years before moving to California for the sole purpose of running for Congress. After doing so, getting elected three times in a tough district seems to be her only accomplishment of note. Her only real qualification for her late run for governor is the ability to spend her husband’s money. A final likeness to Huffington is her famous ignorance or indifference about the issues. She refused to talk to reporters for weeks despite spending millions on glossy but vacuous commercials.
