Residents Speak Against 436-Home Development
A developer unveiled plans Tuesday for 436 homes on a large coastal field, drawing opposition from about 150 residents at a crowded Planning Commission hearing.
In addition to the homes on the 250-acre Marblehead Coastal site, the Lusk Company Inc. is proposing a 61-acre entertainment center, including a theater and restaurant with Spanish-style architecture, and a small park.
Supporters said the project will bring needed sales-tax revenue to the city, which has grappled with budget shortfalls in recent years.
But a majority of the residents at the hearing spoke against the plan. Many said they wanted the hotel resort and golf course originally proposed in 1992.
“We will not let this property be sacrificed for revenue to the city,” resident Mary Anne Comes said.
The Planning Commission will hold another public hearing on the proposal April 14 before making its recommendation to the City Council.
