Fire Station Rededicated in Hahn’s Memory

Seeking to honor the legacy of the late County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn, the Los Angeles County Fire Department on Wednesday rededicated Lawndale’s Fire Station 21 in his memory at a ceremony attended by city and county officials and joined by members of Hahn’s family.

Fire officials credited Hahn with pushing to get the fire station built and with creating the paramedic program and freeway emergency call boxes. They recalled how Hahn’s influence in the department led officials to name him an honorary chief when he retired, and they unveiled a plaque citing his accomplishments that will be hung permanently at the station.

Hahn’s son, James, the Los Angeles city attorney, reminisced about how his father followed the fire engines when they were out riding. He said his father would drive to the scene of the fire and talk to the firefighters because he admired them so much. “He really appreciated what they did and how they cared more about others than themselves, which was a lot like he was,” Hahn said. “It’s very nice that they wanted a county fire station named after him, it couldn’t have been a nicer fit.”
