Magazine to Help Give Homeless a Voice, Income

A new monthly magazine designed to “provide a voice for the homeless as well as set them on the path of economic empowerment” was unveiled Thursday at a ceremony attended by more than 200 people at the Dome Village downtown.

The Big Issue will be sold on street corners throughout the city by homeless people who will keep 60 cents for every $1 magazine they sell, a community activist said.

“It’s going to give a lot of people that have too much time on their hands something to do,” said Virginia Contreras, the office manager at the Dome Village housing complex near the Harbor Freeway and 9th Street. “We like to help people help themselves.”

Modeled after a London magazine, the Big Issue will feature articles about pressing social issues as well as restaurant and movie reviews, a former Dome Village director said.

“This is not just a throwaway homeless newspaper,” David Buchbinder said. “They are going to be doing hard news and investigative journalism.”
