A 9-year-old girl wounded in a Highland Park shooting remained in critical condition Thursday after surgery to remove her spleen, one of her kidneys and part of her pancreas, a County-USC Medical Center spokeswoman said.

The child, whose name was withheld, was shot about 4 p.m. Wednesday in the 5200 block of East Baltimore Street as she went to close the front door of her home to protect herself from gunshots she heard outside, authorities said.

“She was wounded in the right side of her chest and the bullet traveled to her abdomen,” hospital spokeswoman Adelaida De La Cerda said.

The child may have been the victim of cross-fire from a gang drive-by shooting, police said.
