Hotel Proposed for Vacant Building Site
The former Pacific Savings Building, a grand but vacant Mission-style complex at Newport Boulevard and 19th Street, could become a hotel, according to a preliminary proposal.
Conceptual plans by San Diego-based MCM Architects for a 304,000-square-foot center with 387 guest rooms, shops and offices will go before the City Council on Monday.
The proposal would require a changing the city’s general plan because it includes a seven-story hotel tower. Only four-story buildings are allowed south of the San Diego Freeway.
“The central issue is really going to be the height of the building,” City Manager Allan L. Roeder said.
The City Council will decide Monday whether to allow the developer to apply for a change to the general plan. The Planning Commission soon will consider a zoning change needed for the proposal to move forward.
