John Garamendi, the former state insurance commissioner who joined the Clinton administration in 1995, announced Friday that he will leave government to join a private investment group.

Garamendi, 52, has been serving as deputy interior secretary. He took the post after Kathleen Brown defeated him in the 1994 Democratic primary for governor.

At the Interior Department, Garamendi’s chief focus was on setting federal policy on natural resources in California and Alaska, the agency said. He plans to leave the department April 17 to join the Los Angeles-based Yucaipa Cos. as a partner and to establish an office in Washington.
