Attention, Utah and McGill: There Is Work to Be Done

Share

Concerning the sad state of the once-great Billy “the Hill” McGill [March 28]:

1. Attention, Utah: McGill brought you national recognition and generated bucks for the school. Employ him! But with the condition that he enroll and complete his degree. I’m sure you can find the money and one empty desk. Its a good deed and good PR!

2. Attention, McGill (phase one): Get a job! The perfect job for bad knees is available right now right in L.A.! Telemarketing! Degrading? I think not. Thousands of honest people support their families this way.

3. Attention, McGill (phase two): Get a degree! Take night courses if necessary, but do it. Eliminate obstacles in your path. Then teach kids. You’ve lived. You know. In a sense you are teaching now. Get paid for it.

As a University of Utah contemporary of Billy McGill, I enjoyed your story on him, though I never saw him play. I take a somewhat perverse pleasure in seeing my university roasted. Perhaps the Surgeon General should require a warning label for basketballs and footballs:

“Caution: Use of this product beyond your high school years (1) may not help prepare you for life after sports and (2) will result in very sore and painful knees for the remainder of your life.”
