Steven Stark (Opinion, March 29) states that the Titanic’s sinking is of “trivial historical consequence.” In fact, it is of considerable significance. Some of the actions following the Titanic’s sinking were: An international ice patrol was established to warn seafarers of icebergs; sufficient lifeboats were required on all ships to accommodate every person aboard; ship design was changed to include double bottoms along the sides of the hull, and even Titanic’s sister, Olympic, was modified with these changes; emergency radio frequencies at sea were manned 24 hours a day.
