Agency Backs Plan to Allow Dealership

A zoning change application that would allow a car dealership to move into the property occupied by the Van Nuys Drive-In Theater has been approved by the city Department of Planning and Land Use Management.

The City Council, which has the final say on the matter, is scheduled to review the application later this month.

“Everything looks good at this point,” said Tom Henry, an aide to Councilman Joel Wachs. “This is something that people who live nearby are not only not opposing, but are in full support of.”

The application calls for a change in zoning from a residential to a commercial designation. Although the property has been zoned for residential use for years, the drive-in theater was allowed to operate as an exception.

After the theater closed in early 1996, Car Max, a used-vehicle dealership owned by Circuit City, made moves to purchase the Roscoe Boulevard property. Before it can develop the dealership, Car Max must receive approval of the zoning change.
