Gateway 2000 Plans Move Into Irvine, Will Add 50 Jobs

Gateway 2000 Inc., which markets personal computers, said Tuesday it will expand its operations in California, opening a new division in Irvine and an administrative headquarters in San Diego.

Gateway said its Irvine division, Gateway Business, will focus on the business market, which accounted for more than 30% of Gateway’s total shipments in the United States last year. The company said it plans to add 50 jobs this year in Irvine, and will expand the staff further next year.

Last year, Gateway bought the sales and marketing divisions of Advanced Logic Research Inc. in Irvine, a microcomputer maker. Advanced Logic will become a division of Gateway Business and the operations will be fully integrated, said Jeff Weitzen, Gateway’s president and chief operating officer.

The San Diego quarters, Gateway’s first in that city, will have about 100 employees, the company said.
