Orange County Fair Director A.G. Kawamura resigned after one year in office to accept a higher state appointment, fair officials announced Tuesday.

Gov. Pete Wilson named Kawamura, 41, of Newport Beach, to the California State Board of Agriculture in Sacramento.

He will work closely with Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman and the governor on farming and related issues.

The new appointment is for four years. Kawamura will continue to serve on the foundation that provides school tours and fund-raising for the fairgrounds’ Centennial Farm.

Kawamura’s resignation comes a few days after the appointment of Jeffrey Stern, 55, of Newport Beach to the fair board.

It is unknown when Wilson will choose the next replacement. Some residents have been calling on the governor to appoint someone from Costa Mesa to the nine-member board.

The last appointee from the city served from 1977-80.
