Stop Signs Approved Along Riverside Drive

Stop signs will be installed on Riverside Drive, the curving street with the Grand Prix reputation, despite opposition from some homeowners.

The City Council this week upheld a previous decision to erect one sign on the street at Riedel Avenue and another at Ferndale Avenue.

Residents were divided on the issue, and both camps circulated petitions.

Opponents said the signs might not stop speeding motorists and might hurt property values. But both sides conceded that a dangerous speeding problem exists on their curved street.

The council called the stop signs the best solution.

Even if drivers don’t come to a full stop, they may slow at the signs, Councilman F. Richard Jones said.

“A ‘California stop,’ I think, is better than nothing at all. . . . When in doubt, you must think safety.”

The council earlier rejected a proposal to turn the street into a cul-de-sac. That proposal was prompted by the death of a 19-year-old man who crashed while drag racing on the street last year, police said.
