A team of two teachers from Westminster High School has been awarded a $12,000 grant to start a mathematics and science project.

The team, teachers Carol Brouhle and Kathleen Iverson, was among 60 nationwide that won the grants through GTE Corp.’s Growth Initiatives for Teachers program.

“The teachers suggest a project and the award is given based on the innovativeness of that project,” said GTE spokeswoman Sharon Cohen-Hagar.

Brouhle and Iverson’s grant will be used for a classroom project they titled “Passport to Mathematics and Science.”

The project will have high school students design and create 10 to 15 museum-quality, interactive math and science exhibits and other learning materials for use by local elementary and middle schools.

The GTE program was established in 1983 and has since awarded about $9 million to 1,600 teachers.
