Beach, Pier Plaza Lot Parking Rates Rise
Beach-goers and downtown shoppers will have to dig deeper into their pockets next year to park.
The City Council this week approved higher parking fees in an effort to raise money for area maintenance costs.
Among the changes, a park-and-pay system will be added to the Pier Plaza parking lot on Main Street in June, with hourly rates at $1.50. More than 630 parking spots will be added at the existing $1-per-hour street parking rate to accommodate visitors, said Steve Benson, parking and camping supervisor.
The council also unanimously approved the following increases: yearly beach parking pass, from $60 to $100; yearly passes bought after Labor Day, from $25 to $35; monthly Main Promenade parking pass, from $10 to $20; yearly Main Promenade parking pass, from $60 to $100; and structure passes bought after Labor Day, from $25 to $35.
Yearly parking passes for seniors at the beach and Main Promenade lots will remain at $35.
Officials said they hope to raise $20,000 a year with the increases. The money will be used to maintain the Main Promenade structure and beach parking lots.
