High School Crowding Prompts Call for Transfers

To stem the wave of freshmen expected to hit Capistrano Valley High School in the fall, school district officials are urging parents of eighth-graders to consider sending their children to one of three other campuses.

The measure is one of several ways Capistrano Unified School District officials are coping with overcrowding at the Mission Viejo campus. This year, 2,787 students crammed into the school, designed to accommodate 2,075 students. Enrollment is expected to reach 3,736 in two years.

Under the plan, eighth-graders can opt to attend one of the district’s three other high schools: Aliso Niguel, San Clemente or Dana Hills. Other overcrowding measures at Capistrano Valley include adding six portable classrooms and one restroom; splitting students between two lunch hours; and extending instruction time by two periods.

School officials will ask district trustees this month to reinstate a 1979 work experience program and allow students to take elective classes at Saddleback College, said Patrick Levens, executive director of secondary instructional services.
