Emergency Center To Be Closed Today
With the rainy season dwindling and new disaster victims on the wane, the Orange County Red Cross will be closing its local emergency center at 5 p.m. today.
The center, which opened March 2 at the Wells Fargo Bank on Ocean Avenue, has helped 251 people weather the aftermath of El Nino-related storms and mudslides this winter.
The total cost of helping Orange County’s storm victims is close to $83,000, an amount that came largely from local donations, Red Cross officials said.
The county’s Red Cross chapter helped storm victims pay for everything from motel rooms to medicine and clothing. The agency also offered psychological help.
Red Cross workers are still helping seven families cope with recent storm damage, but spokeswoman Judy Iannaccone said the need for a local emergency center has abated.
