A 16-year-old girl who was the most seriously injured of the survivors in a high school shooting spree in December returned home to balloons, signs and a newly built wheelchair ramp.

Missy Jenkins was the last of the five wounded in the Dec. 1 shootings at Heath High School to be released from the hospital. Three girls were killed.

“It’s a little weird to think I get to stay and sleep in my own bed,” Missy said.

Friends, classmates and family gathered around the Jenkins house Thursday to welcome Missy, who spent the last seven weeks at Cardinal Hill Hospital in Lexington.

Missy was paralyzed from the waist down in the shooting, when a schoolmate with a handgun fired 11 shots into a group of students at a prayer circle meeting.

Michael Carneal, 14, is charged as an adult with murder, attempted murder and burglary. Court records show he admitted stealing the guns from a neighbor’s garage days before the shooting.
