Orange Coast Crew Dominates Four-Year Colleges in Rowing

The men’s varsity eight crew led the way for Orange Coast in a sweep of all five events Saturday in Newport Harbor.

The crew of Walter Coyle, Graham Hoover, Rosh Gruwell, Patrik Englund, Mark Miller, Mike Morton, David Caro-Greene, Kent Gladinus and coxswain Jamie Ballard won the men’s varsity eight in 5 minutes 49 seconds. Long Beach State was second in 5:51, and UC Irvine (5:56) finished third.

In the novice eight, Orange Coast won in 5:52.

In the women’s varsity eight, Orange Coast was first in 6:43, followed by UC Irvine (7:03).

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

Cal State Northridge 3, UC Irvine 0--Chad Strickland had 26 kills and 10 digs to help visiting Northridge to a 15-8, 15-8, 15-11 victory.

Junior Mosones had 19 kills and Adam Black and Mark Lee each had 11. John Baxter had 70 assists for the Matadors (10-13, 6-12).

Irvine (9-14, 5-13) was led by freshman Jeremy Koop with 20 kills. Cory Weber and Donnie Rafter each added 10 kills. Kevin Dake had 58 assists for the Anteaters.

The Cal State Fullerton baseball game against Nevada, scheduled for Saturday at Titan Field, was suspended after a half-inning because of rain.

The game will be continued at 1 today with Fullerton batting in the bottom of the first. Neither team had scored.

The game was delayed 35 minutes, then suspended when heavy rain began about 25 minutes later.
