New Premier Follows in Family Footsteps

King Birendra has appointed Girija Prasad Koirala prime minister of the Himalayan kingdom, a palace announcement said. Koirala, chief of the centrist Nepali Congress party--and the third member of his family to be appointed the nation’s prime minister--will head a minority government and must seek a confidence vote in parliament within 30 days, party officials said. Since the hung elections of 1994, Nepal has been racked by political instability. Koirala is the country ‘s fifth prime minister in four years.
