City Applying for Grant to Curb Gangs
A $1.2-million effort to combat gang violence in northwest Oxnard is being proposed by city officials.
The Oxnard City Council is expected to approve today submitting a grant application for state money.
The gang violence suppression grant would pay for a police officer, deputy district attorney and probation officer to monitor “hard core gang members” over the next three years.
It’s envisioned as a partnership between law enforcement officials, school districts and community groups that would lead to a reduction in gang violence in Ventura County’s largest city.
The city must pay 10% of the program’s cost the first year, a figure that would rise to 30% by fiscal year 2000-01. If the program is successful, the city would assume the cost in subsequent years.
