Poll on Prop. 226

Share

The Times Poll on Prop. 226 was most enlightening (April 13). Labor leaders have been whining for weeks about the effect of Prop. 226 on “labor,” as though labor were a monolith with a single set of interests. But while 90%-plus of union political contributions go to Democrats, we know that at least 40% of union members vote Republican in most elections and some Republicans (Nixon and Reagan) have gotten majorities from union households. From the poll, we now also know that 58% of union members plan to vote for Prop. 226.

So whose ox is being gored? Not that of rank-and-file union members, but that of their left-wing union bosses who are out of step with their own membership.
