Cardiology Clinic to Get $12,745 to Test Officers

Share

Forgoing a competitive bid process, the City Council has agreed to pay a cardiology clinic $12,745 to ensure the city’s 79 police officers stay fit.

The council on Tuesday waived the usual process of seeking competitive bids because the Orange County Heart Center, which has held the contract for three years, provides a cardiologist to personally monitor treadmill tests for officers older than 40. The center also holds three years of data on officers’ health.

With 30 officers older than 40, the $335 treadmill tests account for the bulk of the contract. Police Chief Richard M. Tefank said the test will help detect heart problems early and keep officers healthy.

The council unanimously passed the proposal with little discussion.

The other 49 officers will be evaluated under less strenuous criteria at $55 an officer, Tefank told the council.
