Church-School Project Is Approved by Panel

A development that includes a Montessori school, church and offices has received Planning Commission approval, despite objections from neighboring homeowners who oppose the buildings’ three-story design.

Residents, who hired an attorney to represent them, submitted a petition in opposition to the development on Santa Ana Canyon Road west of Fairmont Boulevard. Their concerns included the effect the development would have on privacy, traffic, noise and property values.

Commissioners reviewed the project, originally approved in 1994, and imposed a number of restrictions they said would make the development more compatible with the neighborhood.

Restrictions include limiting use of the attics of the school, new Canyon Church and office buildings to mechanical equipment, and covering attic windows to prevent views into neighboring homes.

The school and church will be allowed to open once the restrictions are met, planning staffers said.
