Police Kill 2 While Breaking Up Protest
At least two protesters were killed when police opened fire in the opposition stronghold of Ibadan in the southwest to disperse a demonstration against military ruler Gen. Sani Abacha, witnesses said. Opposition groups called the march to coincide with a demonstration by Abacha’s supporters to urge him to stand in elections he has decreed for Aug. 1. Nigeria is on a political knife-edge in the run-up to the elections, which have been dismissed by opponents as a farce intended to keep power in the hands of the military.
