New Traffic Signal Gets Green Light
After more than a decade of discussion, Ojai will install its fourth traffic signal this summer. It will be the city’s first new light since the 1940s.
The City Council on Tuesday approved the $246,000 signal for the intersection of Ojai Avenue and Fox Street.
“I think it’s actually going to be a good thing from the standpoint of making Ojai a pedestrian-friendly place,” City Manager Andy Belknap said.
The intersection is near the city’s park-and-ride lot and is expected to slow vehicles entering downtown from the east without worsening traffic congestion.
The signal light is a block east of the initially proposed site at Ojai Avenue and Montgomery Street. Residents had protested that location because they feared it would change downtown’s small-town character.
The city’s share of the new light is about $185,000, but 85% of that will come from a federal grant. The state will pick up the rest of the tab.
