CSUN Included as Site of Volunteer Festival
The first city-organized Los Angeles Volunteer Festival will be held today at four locations throughout the city, including Cal State Northridge.
The event, expected to draw nearly 100 organizations, is an attempt by the city Bureau of Volunteers to provide would-be volunteers with a number of options in one stop. Organizers hope people will learn which groups need volunteers and will sign up to help.
“What we hope is that this festival will give people interested in volunteering a chance to find out what is out there,” said Joan Kagan, director of volunteer services for the Volunteer Center Assistance League of Southern California.
The league runs one of the largest volunteer referral agencies in the country, with more than 50,000 referrals made last year. Many of the volunteers are people who are ordered by a court to do community service as part of their sentences.
Another festival participant, the American Red Cross, is almost completely run by volunteers and could use more, spokesman Mike Powers said.
“A festival like this is an easy way to attract a lot of people at once,” Powers said.
Today’s event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Oviatt Library quadrangle on campus, 18111 Nordhoff St.
