From Times Wire Reports

Grand Forks residents started a weekend of remembrance to mark the first anniversary of the devastating Red River flood that forced the evacuation of 55,000 people. The weekend included a parade, a Sandbaggers Ball and a tour of the area by Gov. Edward T. Schafer. Residents of neighboring East Grand Forks, Minn., joined the weekend activities. The floods caused an estimated $1.6 billion in damage to both cities. “People’s spirits and determination are good,” Schafer said. “And while there are still issues here of rebuilding, it’s evident people are moving forward and putting the events behind them.” Schafer said 1,000 jobs had been created in the last year.
