Teachers in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District will get a $100,000 boost tonight when they are honored at the district’s third annual Grants to Teachers Awards Banquet.

One hundred teachers and projects at 27 district schools will receive money, aimed at augmenting classroom studies.

Out of the $100,000 total, the Irvine Co. and the Donald Bren Foundation are donating $67,500 in grants--$2,500 each for 27 teachers.

They’ll get to spend the cash on books or other educational materials, or help pay for field trips.

An anonymous committee of 24 residents evaluates which of the programs nominated for grants are worthy of the gifts.

The banquet’s keynote speaker will be novelist T. Jefferson Parker, author of “Laguna Heat” and “Where Serpents Lie,” who will talk about the difference one teacher can make in a child’s life.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Balboa Bay Club, 1221 W. Coast Highway, in Newport Beach. The dinner is $35.
