Fund-Raiser Planned for Rainbow Bridge

Share

Three years ago, 250 volunteers raised about $100,000 and pieced together an elaborate wooden playground at Blanche Reynolds Elementary School.

On Sunday, the people who built it over five intense days, the people who use it and those who simply want to enjoy a low-key celebration will gather for the Rainbow Bridge’s third birthday.

True to the playground’s name, the bash will feature a spectrum of entertainers, from Pelula, a Chumash storyteller, to an African drumming group called “A Joyful Noise.”

A number of local bands and several Blanche Reynolds students also will take part in the festivities from noon until 4 p.m.

The party is free, but organizers are accepting tax-deductible donations at 450 Valmore St., Ventura 93003.

Proceeds will be used for maintenance of the 10,000-square-foot playground.

About 20 volunteers keep the structure in good shape with materials that cost about $2,000 a year, according to David De Santis, an organizer of Sunday’s event.

Refreshments will be available. People are encouraged to bring food, blankets and beach chairs, and make a picnic of it.
