Chamber Votes for a Greater Name

The board of directors of the San Fernando Chamber of Commerce has voted to change the organization’s name to the Greater San Fernando Chamber of Commerce.

Last week’s alteration was made to acknowledge the organization’s expanding role with businesses throughout the northeast Valley, said Scott Schmidt, project manager for the chamber.

Nearly half of the chamber’s 325 members are from communities outside San Fernando, such as Pacoima and Mission Hills.

“The name change, even though it’s only one word, is significant,” Schmidt said, “because we are serving the whole northeast Valley, not just San Fernando.”

Schmidt said businesses throughout the Valley and Los Angeles that want to reach Latinos in the northeast Valley sign with the chamber because of San Fernando’s large Latino population.

In 1996, according to figures compiled by the chamber, there were 135,981 Latinos living within a three-mile radius of San Fernando.
