Arlington Won’t Have Live Racing Next Year

Arlington International Racecourse officials decided against seeking racing dates for 1999, the second consecutive season without live racing.

Arlington, once one of the top thoroughbred tracks in Midwest, closed last September citing total loses of about $70 million over eight years.

Owner Richard Duchossois cited several reasons for the decision to close, including stringent state oversight, high taxes and increased competition from riverboat and casino gambling.
