The question July 19: Debate in Washington continues over the age at which people should be able to retire with full Social Security benefits, with some members of Congress wanting to boost the retirement age to as high as 70. At what age do you want to quit working, and what will you do instead?

Age 62. Seventy is an offensive political affront. What will I do? Write. Volunteer. Teach. Study. Garden. Travel. And I want it before age 70.

Why not retire all those in the House and the Senate? Make those legislators live on the crummy benefits, both financial and medical, they want to stick all the elderly with. Then cut, cut, cut benefits for them every year instead of the hefty wage increases they get.

Usually a body starts complaining between 65 and 68. Age 65 is long enough to work.

Employers are now laying off people in their 50s and 60s, and the California Supreme Court has said it is OK to lay off older workers for economic reasons. Then retirement is not an option. You retire because no one will hire you. I think the court should be laid off so we can hire a new Supreme Court at a lower cost.

I am 80 years old and still want to work. I think elderly people should be permitted to work if they are willing and able.

I would work less from 45 on in order to play more but continue to work as long as I lived.

Look, Congress, I’ve paid in for over 40 years. Show me the money--at 62, when I can still enjoy retirement.

At age 70, I plan to retire and do full time what I already do now: read, paint, write, act, cook, shop and sew.
