Man Surrenders; No One Hurt in Standoff

A man surrendered to end a standoff in which he allegedly held the daughter of the woman he once lived with, an anti-death penalty activist who carried her campaign all the way to the Vatican. Lori Urs, who married a death row inmate last year just hours before his execution in Virginia, also was briefly held hostage but escaped. She was brought back to the scene to help police negotiators talk John Nutter into surrendering. Nutter, 33, had holed up in a house in Chatham, Mass., for nearly 36 hours, armed with a shotgun and a knife. Before his surrender, Jennifer Urs, 14, was taken away by ambulance. During the negotiations, Nutter reportedly said he wanted to marry Urs, and demanded a minister. Nutter called the Cape Cod Times on Saturday, asking for a pack of cigarettes and an opportunity to tell his story.
