Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham (R-San Diego) had surgery Wednesday to remove a cancerous prostate gland, the congressman’s office said.

The cancer was detected during a routine physical exam, and a 90-minute operation was performed at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

Capt. Paul Christenson, the surgeon, said he expected Cunningham to “recover fully,” according to a statement issued by the congressman’s office.

“Everything went better than expected,” said Patrick McSwain, Cunningham’s press secretary. Cunningham is expected to be discharged later this week.

An outspoken conservative and highly decorated former Navy combat pilot, Cunningham, 56, is seeking his fifth House term in November.
