With the aim of educating the public on living a healthy lifestyle and preventing disease, the West Valley Family YMCA will host its first Community Health Day Thursday.

The daylong event will feature lectures on osteoporosis and alternative healing methods, such as acupuncture and herbal medicine, an exercise swimming class and introduction to a 12-week personalized fitness program designed for individuals leading a sedentary lifestyle, said Marsha Gooden, counselor and trainer at the West Valley Family YMCA.

“This special health event is a great opportunity to bring together adults in the community for a day of health prevention and enjoyment,” Gooden said.

The day’s festivities will also include ultrasound screenings for stroke, aneurysm and osteoporosis, said Joel Geffen, vice president of marketing at Life Line Screening, a Houston-based health-screening firm that will be conducting the tests.

Results will be reviewed by a board-certified physician, Geffen said.

“Any abnormalities that are found will be notified to the individuals by certified mail, suggesting that they take this to their doctors for further review,” Geffen said.

Cost is $40 per screening, $98 for three screenings and $125 for all four screenings. Cholesterol and glucose screening will also be offered for $25.

Those interested in taking part in the screenings must preregister with Life Line by calling (888) 985-5433.

Thursday’s event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the West Valley Family YMCA, 18810 Vanowen St., Reseda.
