Councilman Steve Apodaca has announced that he will leave office when his term expires later this year.

“The good Lord has blessed me with three wonderful children,” Apodaca said in a statement last week. “I blinked and two of them are now adults. I won’t let that happen again.”

Apodaca was elected in 1994 and served as San Clemente’s mayor in 1996. Prior to his election, Apodaca served on the San Clemente Planning Commission, the Fire Department Master Plan Committee and the Pier Bowl Conceptual Plan Committee.

The councilman has been involved in regional organizations including the League of California Cities and the Southern California Assn. of Governments.

Apodaca said he will miss “the fine, dedicated, honest and decent” people he has worked with at the city, county and state levels, but that he will not miss the many meetings and demands on his time.

But he promised that in his final four months as councilman, he will continue to “devote the same amount of time, energy and enthusiasm” to the job.
