Glasgow Has Share of Lead at Amateur

Jenny Glasgow, a junior at Pepperdine, is tied with two others for the first-round lead at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Golf Championship after shooting a course-record, two-under-par 70 on Tuesday at Barton Hills Country Club in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Brenda Corrie Kuehn of Fletcher, N.C., and Virginia Derby Grimes of Montgomery, Ala., also shot 70, one shot better than the previous women’s record from the middle tees set by Babe Didrickson Zaharias in 1948.

Linda-Chen Olsen of Granada Hills is five strokes behind the leaders and is tied for 40th place. Anne Lee of Northridge, Linda Ishii of Westlake Village and Cheryl Musser of West Hills each shot 79 and are tied for 95th.

The top 64 finishers after the second round of stroke play today advance to match play, which begins Thursday.

Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys shot a four-under-par 68 on the Eisenhower Course to finish in a three-way tie for second in the Southern California Golf Assn. U.S. Amateur championships sectional qualifying tournament at Industry Hills Golf Club.

Steinberg’s 68 gave him a 36-hole total of 143 and a berth in the U.S. Amateur championships at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, N.Y., on Aug. 24-30.

Tim Hogarth of Chatsworth also shot a 143 to earn one of two alternate spots.

BASEBALL

Tyler Johnson of Newbury Park High scattered seven hits, struck out 12 and walked two over six innings to help Conejo Valley to a 5-2 victory over Sacramento in a Little League Western Regional 17-18 tournament at American River College.

Conejo Valley (19-1) won despite the absence of starters Mike Falco, Kevin Howard and Wes Rasmussen, who were playing in the Area Code Games in Long Beach.

Dave Turner of Ventura College, a pitcher who hadn’t batted since eighth grade, had a bunt single that contributed to a three-run rally in the third, and doubled and scored in the fifth. He picked up a save by pitching a scoreless seventh.

SOFTBALL

The Southern California Stealth lost to the Santa Fe Springs Rebels, 5-0, on Sunday in the championship game of the ASA 18-and-under national tournament in Sacramento.

The Stealth, 10-2 in the tournament, faced elimination in the 76-team tournament after losing to the Rebels, 5-0, on Saturday, but won five consecutive games to get to the title game.

Pitcher Summer Richardson, a Cal State Northridge recruit from Boron High, pulled a leg muscle Sunday and did not return to form.

Maureen LeCocq of Chaminade relieved Richardson in the first inning against the Rebels.

“[LeCocq] said, ‘I’ll pitch, but I have nothing left,’ ” Manager Don Harris said.

The Stealth earned an automatic berth to next year’s 18-and-under Gold national tournament.

Lori Tande and Jill Clarkson of Simi Valley, Megan Reece of Alemany and Jenny Wilkenson of Royal played for the Rebels.

The Valencia Choppers tied for 17th.

The 16-and-under Southern California Athletics finished runner-up to the USA Athletics in the ASA national tournament Sunday in Novi, Mich.

The SoCal Athletics--which include Meredith Cervenka of Crescenta Valley, Alana Mendoza of Camarillo, Sara Dean of Hart, Julie Watson and Kelly Corneilson of Saugus and Lindsay Weinstein of Camarillo--lost to the USA Athletics, 8-0, in five innings in the championship game.

The West Hills Southern California Stealth tied for 17th and the Simi Valley Rampage tied for 33rd in the 76-team tournament.

Jodie Cox of Quartz Hill was selected an 18-and-under Gold All-American.

Cox, who was chosen as a utility player, helped San Dimas’ Flash D’Gold to seventh place.

Melinda Moulden of Crescenta Valley was chosen a third-team All-American outfielder.

The Conejo Valley 10-and under all-star team finished fourth among 22 teams in the ASA Western U.S. championships in Oakdale, Calf.

Conejo Valley beat Simi Valley, 5-2, in the consolation final Sunday at Fish Park. Conejo Valley finished 6-2 in the four-day tournament and was 36-10 this season.

FOOTBALL

Buckley School in Sherman Oaks has dropped football after only eight students committed to playing in the fall.

“It’s sad because there are a handful of kids who would have done anything to be out there, but that’s not enough to really be viable,” Buckley Athletic Director Dan Gilmartin said.

Buckley played 11-man football the last two seasons after moving up from the eight-man level. The Griffins were 1-8 last season, their only victory coming by forfeit.

The private school has about 140 boys in grades nine through 12, Gilmartin said.

BASKETBALL

Jeff Dunlap, former women’s coach and men’s assistant at College of the Canyons, has been hired as an assistant by Loyola Chicago men’s team, Coach Larry Farmer announced Tuesday.

Dunlap played for Farmer at UCLA after playing at Pierce College and North Hollywood High.

AUTO RACING

Cory Kruseman of Ventura finished third and Marc Hart of Ventura was eighth behind winner Rip Williams of Yorba Linda in the 30-lap Sprint Car Racing Assn. main event Saturday at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare.

Frank Maronski Jr. of Quartz Hill finished 10th in the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour feature race at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield.

M.K. Kanke of Granada Hills is second in the Southwest Tour standings with 1,415 points. Points leader Steve Portenga of Sparks, Nev., has 1,458.

VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine is ranked 25th in the USA Today/American Volleyball Coaches Assn. Division I women’s preseason poll. The Waves were 23-6 last season.

Penn State is top-ranked in the poll, with Long Beach State ranked second and USC third.

Cal State Bakersfield, coached by former Cal State Northridge coach John Price, is ranked fifth in the Division II poll.
