Law Amended to Allow 6-Story Hotel in Old Town

To make way for a new luxury hotel next year in the heart of Old Pasadena, the City Council has eliminated a five-story limit on structures.

With developers proposing a six-story Courtyard by Marriott on North Fair Oaks Avenue, the council agreed to amend the city’s general plan to remove the limit on the number floors for the city’s central business district.

However, the 5-1 vote--with Councilman Paul Little dissenting--did not lift a restriction that limits the structures to 60 feet in height. Little said he opposed the measure because his council colleagues did not consider how developers might use such loopholes to get around height limits.

The vote Monday night amended the city’s general plan that was approved by voters in 1992 with a specific provision designed to prevent developers from trying to cram extra floors into structures. But city planners told council members that provision was not needed given the height limit.
