Discussion on Iraqi Sanctions

The American Friends Service Committee, a Quaker organization, and the Ojai Unitarians will jointly sponsor a talk on “Iraq: Economic Sanctions--a Weapon of Mass Destruction” on Sunday.

Sonia Tuma, coordinator of the American Friends Service Committee’s Middle East Peace Education Program, will speak at the 10 a.m. meeting at Grey Gables in Ojai. The public is invited to the free event.

‘Gone Fishing’ Sermon With Music

* The Channel Island Clippers will provide music for the Oxnard Presbyterian Church’s sermon at 10 a.m. Sunday titled “Gone Fishing.”

Church school for all youths, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, is held during the worship service. Church school for adults is at 9 a.m.

Vacation Bible school for the whole family is free and will be held Thursday through Aug. 23 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Church Treasurer to Be Honored

* Ventura’s College United Methodist Church will honor longtime church treasurer Bud Bryson at the 10 a.m. worship service on Sunday.

On Aug. 23, Native American Sunday and Blessing of the Animals will be held on the lawn. The community is invited to bring pets; a Chumash storyteller and a Cherokee flutist will perform.

A Russian choral group from St. Petersburg will perform a concert at 7 p.m. Aug. 28. The five-person professional ensemble will sing a cappella religious music.

Chabad Phone-Athon Fund-Raiser

* Chabad of the Conejo will continue its 12th annual phone-athon fund-raiser Sunday. Volunteers will begin calling the community for donations at 9:30 a.m. Funds raised will be used for Chabad’s outreach and educational programs.

Couple to Share Sermon in Song

* Jim and Lynn Decker-Mahin, accompanied by pianist Kevin Parcher, will share a sermon in word and song called “The King and I” at Camarillo United Methodist Church on Sunday. Child care will be available for the 9 and 10:30 a.m. services.

Through the story of two people from very different countries and cultures, “We will investigate the Christian theme of ‘getting to know you,’ ” said secretary Patricia Carroll.

Temple Plans Open Houses

* Thousand Oaks’ Temple Etz Chaim will hold open houses at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 30 and Sept. 13. Prospective members are invited for a tour of the temple and the opportunity to meet with the rabbi.

First Lutheran Bible School

* Camarillo’s First Lutheran Church will hold vacation Bible school from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday for pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. The theme for the week will be “Passport to the Holy Land: Following Jesus Every Day.”

Busy Week at St. Paul Baptist

* A special week of activities at Oxnard’s St. Paul Baptist Church will feature a cottage prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hueneme Beach Park.

Three nights of the Young People’s Revival kick off Wednesday, when the children’s ministry will preside at 7 p.m. On Thursday, the youth ministry will direct the 7 p.m. revival, and on Friday, the young adult ministry will lead the revival, also at 7 p.m.

An Aug. 22 praise festival with the inspirational choir is set for 11 a.m. in the church parking lot.

At Youth and Young Adult Day Aug. 23, Trina Winfrey will be guest speaker at the 8 a.m. service. Winfrey is youth president of the Progressive National Baptist Convention.

Shelley Berman to Emcee Event

* Temple Etz Chaim of Thousand Oaks invites the public to an evening of music, comedy and yiddishkeit at 7 p.m. Aug. 23.

Master of ceremonies Shelley Berman will introduce the “Close Enough for Klezmer” band, storyteller Archie Barkin and international singer Lisa Wannamaker, among others. A dessert reception will follow. Tickets are $25 and $20.

The Shabbat service Aug. 28 will feature a special report on a two-week tour of Israel that congregation members recently took with Rabbi Shimon Paskow and his wife, Carol. The service will begin at 8:15 p.m.
