Sorgi Finishes 3rd in U.S. Diving Event

Erica Sorgi of Mission Viejo finished third in the one-meter springboard Friday at the U.S. Diving Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta.

Sorgi (254.10) edged San Juan Capistrano’s Kristin Marquis, who finished fourth with 252.93 points. Defending champion Katie Beth Bryant of Chatham, Ill., won with 259.26 points.

Huntington Beach’s Kellie Brennan finished 12th, Laguna Niguel’s Michelle Brown finished 22nd and Kristen Walls of Aliso Viejo 28th.

Sorgi leads the three-meter event going into today’s finals.

Laguna Beach’s Abel Sanchez was eliminated in the men’s three-meter preliminaries, finishing 28th.

Junior lightweight Yoni Vargas of Westminster headlines the final Rumble at the Races boxing card tonight at Los Alamitos Race Course.

Vargas (6-1, two knockouts) meets Rex Saldana (4-4, one knockout) of Van Nuys in one of six, four-round bouts.

Racing begins at 6:30 p.m. and the boxing show at 7.

Mike Parsons and Evan Slater of San Clemente and Terence McNulty of Capistrano Valley advanced to the third round of the Katin Team Challenge in heavy surf south of the Huntington Beach Pier.

Peter Mel of Santa Cruz, known for his ability to ride big waves, also advanced. Waves up to 12 feet are expected today and Sunday.

Former Angel second baseman Bobby Grich, who played 17 seasons in the major leagues, will be inducted into the Baltimore Orioles’ Hall of Fame in ceremonies Aug. 26 at Camden Yards.

Grich played for the Orioles from 1970-76. In 1977, he signed with the Angels as a free agent and played through the American League Championship Series against Boston in 1986.

Grich is assistant general manager of the Vigilantes.

Paula Pyers, co-owner and general manager of the Vigilantes, and Mary Lou Youngblood, community relations director the Sparks of the WNBA, will speak Tuesday at the monthly Sports Newsmakers Luncheon at the Arrowhead Pond.
