Re “Anti-Gang Leader to Get Award in Geneva,” Aug. 3.

William “Blinky” Rodriguez, executive director of Communities in Schools / Valley Unity Peace Treaty, is one of the finest leaders we have in the San Fernando Valley. He truly deserves the Medialle d’Excellence awarded to him by the World Wins Corporation in Geneva, Switzerland on Aug. 5 for his commitment to at-risk youth and proactive role in assisting gang members to become responsible adults in mainstream society. He is a living example that our troubled young people can be reclaimed and redeemed, and this dedication is a service to our entire community.

What I can’t understand is why The Times relegated the story of this wonderful man’s personal sacrifice and success to page B2 of the Valley Edition while a father accused of slaying his infant son was the featured story on the front page, along with a full-color photograph.

If we really want to nurture the best in our children, we adults need to get our priorities straight. Isn’t it about time that those who exemplify integrity and service to others get top billing in the news?
