Day Runner Picks CEO

Day Runner Inc., Irvine-based seller of planners and other personal organizers, named a new chief executive Tuesday and posted higher earnings and sales for the fourth quarter.

Chairman Mark Vidovich relinquished his title as chief executive officer, a position he has held for 12 years. He remains chairman and will focus on acquisitions and strategic issues, the company said.

James E. Freeman Jr., president and chief operating officer, was named chief executive. Freeman joined Day Runner in 1993 as chief operating officer and became president in 1995.

Donald E. Bottinelli, marketing vice president, was appointed chief operating officer.

The company also said net income for the fourth quarter grew 22% to $5 million, or 39 cents a share, from $4.1 million, or 33 cents a share, for the corresponding period of the prior year. Sales for the quarter ended June 30 increased 35% to $50.9 million from $37.8 million.

For the year, net income increased 27% to $15.9 million, or $1.27 a share, from $12.5 million, or 95 cents a share, for the previous fiscal year. Sales advanced 32% to $167.8 million from $127.4 million.
