A bomb exploded in a town in north-central Algeria, killing at least 13 people, as newspapers reported that troops shot dead 33 Muslim rebels this week in a new wave of violence. Security forces in Algiers, the capital, said 39 other people were injured, seven of them seriously, when the homemade bomb exploded in El Khemis in Ain Defla province, 80 miles southwest of Algiers. “The hands of terrorism once again target citizens in mass killings,” state-run Algiers radio said, using the term employed by authorities to describe Muslim rebels. Algerian newspapers reported that at least 33 Muslim rebels were killed when troops attacked their hideouts nationwide.
