Adding New Name to Master Plan Is Put Off

A proposal to add the name of the newly designated Valley Glen area to the North Sherman Oaks and Van Nuys Community Master Plan has been temporarily delayed, an aide to Councilman Mike Feuer said Friday.

At a meeting of the City Council’s Planning and Land Use Committee this week, Feuer withdrew the proposal when an official from the city attorney’s office said any such change would have to go back to the Planning Commission for approval, said Sharon Mayer, the councilman’s aide.

Feuer will probably introduce an amendment later, but to do so now would stall the process, Mayer said.

“I think it’s important as a means of recognition for the area,” Mayer said. “The plan should be a reflection of the community, but the process is so late we didn’t want to hold it up, and it can be done later.”

The current master plan takes into account the area now known as Valley Glen, but the name of the newly christened neighborhood is not in the document. Feuer’s proposal would add the name.

All communities in Los Angeles have been undergoing a process in which city planners take 18 months to review and update the planning documents, said Reuben Arceo, an assistant city planner in the Van Nuys office.

The revamped master plans must then make their way through the channels for approval, including consideration by the Planning Commission, a City Council committee and the full council.

The City Council is expected to consider the area’s master plan, without the new name, within the next month, Mayer said.
